It was a long week but I am very happy that it is over already.
On Tuesday I was suppose to be on Tele but they weren't very busy so my teacher put me in ICU. I was very happy when she did because I got two really good patients. The first was one day post-op bowel resection surgery. He has a fistula (basically a tunnel) connected between his bladder and his colon. Well to understand it better; the urinary system is sterile and the bowel is not. Infection was running crazy in his body. He had surgery to repair it and came out with a 20cm incision. He was a pretty sick guy. The other patient had his breathing tube taken out the day before and they were trying to ween him off a BI pap (what people wear with sleep apnea). Well his system was not ready to be extubated and he was having a hard time breathing all morning. By afternoon he was exhausted so they reintubated him. Both of these men were extremely nice and these men are the reason I want to be a nurse - to help people like them that appreciate it!
Wednesday brought a little rest but it still felt like I was running around. I did end up having a coffee date with a really nice guy that I met at work. I don't know where that will go but we have a lunch date tomorrow.
Thursday I had to drive up to Flagstaff for Lab. We are required to do a skills lab every month to make sure we are up to date and we know what we are doing. I stayed at an hotel overnight and went to class because my teacher was going over the previous test. It amazing how the nursing girls are so manipulative because they wanted to argue every single question with the teacher. One of the girls was even shopping for shoes on her laptop the entire class. I wonder how these girls are going to be nurses. It scares me and I hope they will never be my nurse.
Tomorrow brings rest and much needed relaxation. I can not wait for the semester to be over with!

Its March ALREADY!
Last week was so busy I barely had time to think let alone time for posting. I had clinical in Cottonwood on Tuesday, Psych Clinical in Tucson on Wednesday, went to Flagstaff Thursday night to start cleaning the apartment, Test Friday morning and I handed in my keys to the apartment.
Leaving my apartment was a little bitter sweet. I will regret not being able to completely independent but its time to move on; saving all that money is just a bonus. The semester is wrapping up quick, spring break is less than 2 weeks away and then only 3 weeks till finals. Wow where did my life go this semester? I feel like there is not enough time in the day.
Spring break brings a much needed rest and relaxation but it also brings my Dad's surgery. I don't think he realizes how much of an impact it will have on him. He will not be able to lift his shoes let alone do anything in his garage. He felt like it was necessary to sell his airplane that he has been working on for years. What he also doesn't realize is that I am going to be his nurse not his daughter and he is going to listen to me. I know what he needs but I have a feeling he is not going to be a very good patient.
Work was interesting yesterday. For the most part it was slow but there was some exciting things going on. A bunch of cops brought a woman in that was under arrest for violating a restraining order. She claimed shortness of breath so they had no choice. We gave some oxygen and sent her off to jail. We had a young ASU student come in. She said she couldn't remember anything that happened the night before and she thinks she was drugged and then raped. So that brought more cops in. About 3pm a family walked in with there 2 year old boy and basically screamed to help them. The kid was running in the street and was hit by a car and face planted. They parents didn't call 911, they just brought him to us. The scary thing was that the boy had life threatening injuries and should have gone to a level 1 trauma unit. An ambulance was there to get another patient for transport to a behavioral health (psych) unit so they ended up taking the little boy. The good thing was the cops came again! After some flirting, I got up enough nerve to ask one of them out. I am kind of proud of myself and now we are going on date! :-D Just another day in the ER.
Well I am Prescott as I write this watching TV with my brother. I think he enjoys me here. I dread clinical on Tuesdays. To put it gently it is because my instructor is not always nice. No Psych this week and I only have to go up and back from Flagstaff on Thursday for Lab. Short week and I can't wait to get back out to the pool!!

Work
I worked a full shift yesterday with no problems although the patients were somewhat problematic. I walked in with almost a full board of patients which means they were very busy last night.
They had 4 (yes four) psych patients waiting for beds in a psych unit in random places throughout Phoenix. That is a lot and usually it takes about 24-48 to get them a bed. Those patients hang out with us till then; it can be fun. One of the patients woke up about 8am and decided he didn't want to be there anymore and started walking around. We have to keep him there because he was petitioned by the court to stay. Well the firefighters dropping off a different patient decided they wanted a fight and they helped get the guy back in the room. The patient got very mad and started hitting the firefighters. One of the firefighters put him in a head lock and waited till he passed out. We restrained him with four point (arms and legs) leather restraints and he slept the rest of the day.
About halfway through the day a guy checked in with a rash all over his body. His face and torso were completely covered and he stated that it started only 2 days ago. Well my doc wanted to talk to a dermatologist to consult. You know how hard it is to find a dermatologist on a Sunday afternoon? Practically impossible but I was able to eventually get one on the phone from Sun City. The doc said it was most likely an infectious disease of some sort so we sent him off to Phoenix. I hope it wasn't airborne. . . . :-/
About 5pm we always get a rush. Sometimes it feels like they carpool. Well yesterday they did. An entire family of Mexicans checked in. All five of them complained off a cough. I was a little pissed because they are wasting our time. Well the good thing was that our doctor refused to see them because it wasn't a medical emergency (we call that MSOing them, medical screen out). Its crazy how much illegal aliens get away with. That's all I'm going to say about that, otherwise I can go on and on about it.
The day wrapped up early (I love it when the night guy comes in early) and overall I love the ER because it is always interesting.

Nothing New.
I haven't posted because nothing has been going on lately. I went shopping with my mom the other day and got some stuff for my bedroom. I painted last night and it is starting to look pretty good. I don't feel like I am sleeping in a little girls room. I need some curtains, maybe some pillows and I would like to hang some stuff on the wall. Its almost done.
Yesterday consisted of a very relaxing day sun bathing. I finally have some color and not as pale. I think I would still give people a run for their money for the whitest legs contest on the ship though(if we were going).
My mom, dad and I got up early this morning and went to the rummage sale downtown. The biggest find was cheap pool books but the rest was junk. We then headed over to the swap meet and there was no one there. I thought since it is such a beautiful day today more people would be there but no. We didn't buy much and didn't stay long. My dad and I watched Charmed for the rest of the afternoon and I have to say I am very relaxed! Now if I can get through this week - I'm good!

Psych Clinical
Today was the first day back to a somewhat normal routine. My mom and I got up before dawn to head down (or up however you look at it) to Tucson. My ears started to hurt when there was an altitude change but they went away after a couple minutes. We got there a little late but my teacher is awesome and understood.
We listened to report about the different patients and then went to morning group. Morning group is just basically outlining the day and setting goals for the day. One girl stood out to me. She was on suicide watch (one on one care) and seemed really out of it. After the group was over, I sat down next to her and I tried to talk with her. I think she enjoyed my presence, wasn't very chatting but I knew she was looking for a connection. The day went on and my teacher had me do a presentation (for extra credit) in front of all the patients. I talked about anxiety, about the anxiety that I have, and that you can live with it. The patients were very interested in what I had to say and they thought they connected with me more because I was willing to share my own difficulties. My girl (who is only a year older than me) then saw me later and waved. I was happy to see that she was happy to see me because she has been very depressed. She then invited me to play cards and we colored too. Later, when I read in her chart, she is a single mother of 3 kids with 3 different fathers. She has been having auditory hallucinations since she was 13 years old and have been in and out of hospitals since that age. She was just released from prison for smuggling illegal aliens. She also has been have substance abuse issues. We were then hanging out in the pharmacological group when they called a Dr. Armstrong to the street. Well my teacher went running and moments later 5 men came by carrying a patient to the seclusion room. We were lately told that paging Dr Armstrong is code for code blue. The patient escaped and made it to the street. They restrained him and that was the last of it. They handled everything very well and quick. I guess that is what they are suppose to do. Good thing they are well trained. We talked about everything on post conference and in a lot of ways I am so tired of talking about my feelings.
I am finally feeling like I am getting this psych thing. I made a connection with a patient. Even though all I did with her was play games and colored, I feel like I helped her find some joy in the day.

There was another patient there that I found somewhat disturbing. There was this guy that is in the psych hospital the last time that I was there and was still there weeks later. I found out today that he is ordered by the court to stay there and is there for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to combat in the Iraq war. He is of Arabic decent and his family lives over there. When his family found out he joined the marines front line combat they disowned him. They claimed that he killed his own family. In his chart he stated that he did watch people die and felt like he betrayed his family. I feel so bad for this guy and yet I am disgusted by him. He has a vulgar inappropriate behavior. He makes sexual comments to every girl and is just very angry. I don't know what to think about him.

Starting to feel normal.
I actually slept extremely well last night for the first time in a couple weeks although weird dreams still interrupt my sleep. I am also feeling better. I am not laying down today and just working on the endless homework and a couple things around the house. I am ready for a nap but I am trying really hard to stay awake since my mom and I are going to Tucson tomorrow morning for my clinical. (I still feel bad about making her drive down). If the extreme tiredness would go away I think I would feel great!
Homework wise I am very far ahead. I have completed my psychosocial paper, 12 step meetings paper, movie paper, another (and last) patho paper, and several discussions. I have also started to study for the test next Friday but I still feel like I am missing something. The anxiety is always there that I am forgetting something but there really isn't much I can do other than keep ahead on the homework.
Not much else going on. I am excited however for something really stupid. My dad said he wants to watch my show Charmed from the beginning (I just bought the DVDs or rather he bought them for me with my money). Maybe I can get him into it but something tells me he might not like it. Oh well.

Stupidity.
People that are in nursing school are surprisingly stupid. We all have an online class that is worth one credit, it is an eight week course, and very easy. We only have to do one group project in the eight weeks and comment on everyone elses. One group actually had the last project due so we are just getting started. The teacher the entire time to everyone else is saying do not get together in person, this needs to be all online so that she can track our work. Our project consists of choosing a nurses station that needs improvement, draw it out, comment on what works and what doesn't, and draw the new and improved nurses station. Its not hard I even drew out the first drawing of the nurses station, scanned it into the computer and posted it. This girl decided that it wasn't good enough and we should look at more than one nurses station and get together to talk about. The teacher then posts that she does not want us meeting and everything should stay online. This girl is actually making me very mad. She is only creating more work for the rest of us. What makes my drawing not good enough? Just do what they teacher asks and we will get full credit - its not hard!
People are just stupid in nursing school. Most of these girls are extremely book smart but they have no common sense. I think about if they will make good nurses and I say no. A lot of them I cant even see working in the medical setting because they get grossed out still from the sight of an old man's penis. And to think it is our third semester. . .

Valentines.
Yesterday I talked with my doctor about having labyrinthitis. She said that it most likely since we have ruled out everything else. Labyrinthitis is an inflammation of the inner ear. It is more common in people who have had chronic ear infections when they where children (hello?! that is so me!) She has given me some steroids to help with the inflammation. She also told me I need to be flat on my back and I can not me in any altitude changes. I am very lucky that my teachers have been so understanding. We at least have a diagnosis and hopefully I will be getting better soon.
However being flat on my back for the last 3 days has given me time to do several things of homework. All I have to do left is a psychosocial paper and a patho paper for the semester. Today I did my make-up for clinical that I will be missing on Tuesday. It feels really good to be so ahead but I feel like I am missing something. My mom is driving me down to Tucson on Wednesday so that I can do my Psych clinical. I have missed one so far and this Wednesday will be make-up. I can not miss another because it will be too hard and stressful to make up. I am just lucky to have such a loving mother who is will to get up at 5am to drive me down there for a 7am clinical. I am trying to think of things for her to do while down there but with no luck. I do get out at 3pm so its only 8 hours. Maybe I will send her shopping lol.
The only stress in my life right now is my dad lost my car keys. He hates the big set of keys I have to carry around so on Sunday when he had to come and get me from work he detached the car keys from the key ring and he doesn't remember where he left my apartment keys (house, pool/gym key, mail key), my brother's apartment keys, and the house keys. I hope they will turn up soon by us not looking for them. I am of strong belief that if you stop looking for something it will show it. Well no luck but I will be hopeful. At least he cannot blame me for this! :-P
Valentines day went by really fast this year and surprisingly enough it didn't bother me like previous years. My parents each got me a card, my mom bought me flowers, and my grandmother sent me a card. I also got to spend a really nice dinner cook by my mom with MorMor and PaPa. What more can I ask for than to have the people I love around me. I just wish my brother and my grandma could of been here, and it would have been perfect. Probably one of the best Valentines I have ever had.
However there is still someone in my mind that I can't get out of my head. Have you ever been attracted to someone mentally but physically had something to be desired. I felt that way about a volunteer that works in the ER on Sundays. I won't get to see him this week but of my labyrinthitis (haha thats a fun word to type) but I still can't stop thinking about him. He is one of the nicest people have met in a long time. He is also very very smart. He has a molecular biology degree from ASU and is taking the MCAT in May. I really like him as a person but he is total geek, the kind of boy next door, Valedictorian in high school kind of guy. I just don't know what to think of him.

Frustrated.
Today my mom and I got up early and I went and had a MRI. I felt nausea in the waiting room but I got called back quickly. I went back to sleep when I got home and about 3pm we got a call from the doctor's office with the results. Everything came out normal. It is really frustrating because I just want to know what is going on with me because passing out is most definitely not normal. The more online research that I keep doing, the more and more I believe Dr. Mormor is right. Acute Labyrinithitis is her diagnosis. It is an inner ear inflammation that messes with your balance. Ringing in the ears and vertigo - yeap thats me. I just want this all to go away so I can go back to my crazy busy life. I am thinking about calling off work for Sunday so I can get some more rest along with Tuesday clinical so that I don't overwhelm myself too quick. Who knows what will happen but I am always tired these days!

Bored on the couch.
My mom has basically bed ridden me until my dizzy spells go away. I do have an MRI scheduled tomorrow morning at 7:15. This needs to be figured out soon because I am running out of stuff to do and am twiddling my fingers.
While on the couch I have been facebook stalking people. Its been rather entertaining but I feel that I am missing out on my Pi Phi girl's lives. My little is now single again and I haven't talked with her that I found out through a facebook status. I know we could have been good friends but it seems she is too busy to return my calls/facebook wall messages. I think that my little has disappeared from my life. What I also found out is that my Big has deleted her facebook account. I am not too sad because she was never there for me. She calls my little more than me. My mom says that she is jealous of me somehow and that she is treating me bad because of jealously. Well I haven't heard from her since New Years and I think that is for the best. I think I am out of the Pi Phi world for good but I am sad that I left so soon. Cheryl is the only one that contacts me anymore so at least I know I have one good friend.
Sitting here all day has let me get homework done that is not due for a couple weeks. I find it a lot less stressful if I get homework done sooner rather than later. I would feel a lot better if I could get done a movie paper, a psychosocial paper, two AA meeting papers, and another patho paper. Maybe I should do this while I am on the couch. hmm procrastination is setting in. . .

Snow day!
This morning about 5:30am I got a text message saying school was canceled in Flagstaff. This means that the whole class is going to miss today not just me. It helps with my stress level. I was able to get some papers done. We have to do pathophysiology papers (even though we all have taken the pathophysiology class) one every week. It is kind of crazy how much busy work/repeative work we have to do. I also started on the Honor's day project. We have to do a write up on a patient, find guidelines of care, and then present it in April for Honor's day. I think it is a bunch of crap because NAU was recognition for the nursing program that they are now requiring us to do these group projects. I rather just write a 20 page paper like last semester's group had to do. Again repeative busy work that is worth only 5 point of our final grade.
My cousin is once again on dirtyscottsdale.com. Its a little disturbing to me because well she is my cousin and she also has pissed someone off enough that they are out to get her. I admit we are not very close but she is still family.
I have spent the day on the couch and surprisingly I have not been dizzy. I am just very very tired even though I slept 14 hours last night. I guess I will keep doing this but I am sure I will get bored soon.

Interesting Development in Class!
The class situation is a very long story but here is the short version:
My first semester people started hating me because I have been in the nursing field for a couple years and lets just say I know my S**t! The girls then starting expressing their discontent towards me because of my great grades and my doing well in the classes. One girl even went as far as accusing me of cheating. She was out to get me. I came to that conclusion because I was the one who set the curve for the recent test. One girl (Laura) even went as far as telling me to my face to confess to the cheating so that the test could be reevaluated. Well in my opinion these girls are catty little bi**hes! Nothing ever happened except the girls outcasting me in the class. The girls are even bad enough that they complained so much about traveling to Phoenix for the Psych clinical that NAU changed it; even though we signed a contract at the beginning of the enrollment of nursing school that we were willing to travel all over the state.
Well last Friday was the first test of the new semester and once again I did well (88%)! There was however an interesting email sent out by the instructor. She informed us that the Tucson cohort (Tucson, Flagstaff, and Yuma all have cohorts that are in the same semester and are sometimes taught by the same teacher through video) got to take the test as a group and collaborate on it. It was a mistake on the Tucson proctors but it made the Flagstaff cohort fuming mad! I thought this was great! The instructor then decided to give the Flagstaff cohort an extra 6 points on the test to even out the advantage but still that does not make the Flagstaff cohort happy. My grade was increased to 94% so I have nothing to complain about. Here is the email that Laura sent out:
"Hey guys,I wouldn't normally do something like this but I am really unhappy with Donna and our six points. I don't know if any of you feel the way that I do in that although the 6 additional points are very nice, all of us would have done exceedingly better had we had the opportunity to collaborate with one another like the other class. I hope you will help me in expressing that concern with Donna on Friday. I guess I am curious how she came up with the 6 points and if it is as a result of the other cohorts score well I just don't think six points is a good indication of how we would have done. I am not sure what I am expecting to take place but I know that I won't be able to write about this/ discuss this issue further without first discussing it with Donna. If you do not feel this way I understand. And I hope you do not think that I am not appreciate of the additional 6 points. I just know as a cohort we all worked really hard on this test and I know we could have don't exceptionally better had we been given the same advantages. If you do not feel this is worth the time let me know. Thanks. Laura. "
I thought this was great! It really made me Laugh out Loud! This tells me that Laura did not do well on the test. I guess what goes around comes around! Nursing School is high school all over again!!!
As far as my health, the doctor is sending me to get an MRI of my head. She thinks it might be Miener's (sp?) disease. It has to do with the inner ear, and my grandma had it in her early 30's. Who know what will happen but at least I feel like my doctor is doing a thorough job. My mom and I went to the grocery store afterwards and I had an episode there where I had to sit down. I think I am starting to recognize the symptoms well enough now that I might be able to control it a little. Hopefully answers will come soon.
P.S.
Mom went to go by diapers for Molly (the dog) because she is in heat again. Its really funny because when Molly has them on she won't move. She makes me laugh, and makes my life more interesting!

My First Post.
My life has been a little hectic and I think it would be a good idea to start writing things down to help with stress and to help with keeping track of my life.
This week has been busy! When I was heading to class on Thursday (driving up from Phoenix) to lab I sat down and felt very dizzy. I grabbed Katrina's hand and the next I remember is laying on the ground with a paramedic in my face. I passed out and had a hard time breathing I guess. The weird thing was I was in a class of nursing students and all of them freaked out and jumped back. (I heard all of this in a second hand account of course but I thought it was interesting). My teacher, Laura, jumped to help first and Katrina was there. They took me to the hospital in an ambo. I don't remember a whole lot of the ride, I was still kind of fuzzy but I do remember feeling very embarrassed. The ER nurse was super nice but the Doctor in my opinion didn't do a very good job and trying to figure out what is going on with me. My mom came flying up the hill all worried about me. They pumped me full of 4 liters of IV solution and said it was dehydration and stress. My mom took me home to the apartment where we camped out on the floor.
Friday I woke up feeling fine and my mom made a nice breakfast. I didn't get to sleep in because I had to rush off to my first exam of the semester. As soon as I became active and started moving around I became dizzy again. I didn't tell my mom because I wanted to get the test over with. I walked into class with everyone staring at me. They hate me enough because I do well in class but now they feel sorry for me. The looks I got, and the fake "How are you doing" and "I hope you feel better" made me more sick. Sometimes I wonder if they think of ways to kill me so that I stop screwing up the curve for them. lol. My teacher approached my asking how I was doing (I guess I looked pretty bad), I started to cry. Not only was I anxious about the test but I was feeling bad and now she was singling me out. She took me into the hall as soon as the test started saying I need to be off my meds. I didn't agree with what she was saying because she really doesn't know all that much about me, she had good intentions though. I took the test (first one done as usual) and proceeded to call my mom. After a little of a discussion she took me back to the ER. They checked me in and my dad grabbed a shuttle from Phoenix to drive the car home. This time around, the doctor prescribed some valium, and meclinize. It seemed to help with the dizziness so he sent me home. Again, no work up, although he was cute.
All day Saturday I felt fine so I decided to go to work on Sunday. I really enjoy where I work and the people make me happy to go to work in the morning. I work in an ER and we have a great time joking and playing around. The patients are crazy and very interesting at the same time. First thing this morning was an overreacting young mother screaming in the waiting room. Then came the many ambulances and we were playing catch-up all day. I was always excited to hear the ambulance dispatch phone go off because that means cute firemen and paramedics come in. I have this crush on a certain paramedic (engine 272 today). I only saw him once but I always get the feeling that he is just one of those guys who you flirt with but never date. Oh well. There were the usual crazy people that we have to hold for days because they are being petitioned by the state to go the psych hospital.
Well 2pm rolled around and we were steaming along as an ER and I felt dizzy again. I was sitting at the desk talking with Karen and I informed her of the dizziness and what has been happening. I started getting really hot and the next thing I know I am on a gurney and everyone is around me. I passed out at the nurses station. How Embarrassing!!! This time they did a full work up including blood gases, blood cultures, and a CT of my head. It was pretty funny to see my mom cringe when they were doing a blood gas, even though I was the one getting stuck with the needle. Believe me, it hurt (and I have a high pain tolerance too)! It is like watching my brother around someone who is puking. Now that is funny!! Everything once again came back normal and they sent me home after giving me a hard time. I have a very bruised wrist but I feel fine. It is almost like I get dizzy and hot, pass out, and my brain resets and I am fine again.
I don't know what is going so its a little scary. All the tests came back normal so it can't be too bad. My parents have taken away my car keys for a week so I am stranded at home. I contacted all of my teachers so hopefully they will understand but I am restricted to the house.
I am off to try and relax but I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow with my regular doctor, so we shall she what she has to say.
